SportsThe Mackinac Island Lakers take part in a league that is called the Northern Lights League (NLL). League sports consist of soccer, basketball and volleyball. Track and field is also offered but not in the NLL so our students compete against non-league schools in the area. League matches are often scheduled so games are played at around 6:00 on Friday night and again at 9:00 on Saturday morning. The Laker athletes will stay in the opposing team's school or the opposing team will be hosted in our school. The schools that are members of the NLL are Beaver Island, Grand Marais, Hannahville, Munising Baptist, and Paradise. The teams travel to and from the island by ferry boats, but in the winter the sports teams must fly back and forth from the island to the mainland when the lake freezes and the ferry boats no longer run. If the weather is to harsh and the planes are not flying the games are postponed or canceled because there is no other way off the island in the winter. For transportation on the mainland the students are met by a school bus which the Mackinac Island School district shares with the St. Ignace School district. Both the basketball and the volleyball teams will travel on one bus because their games are scheduled to follow one another on Friday night and Saturday morning. The Mackinac Island athletic teams have been very lucky in the past two years. The people of Mackinac Island have recently constructed a new full size gym and full size soccer field for their use.Other ActivitiesTravel ClubClose Up--D.C. |
