OBJECTIVE:
The goal of this unit is to apply scientific concepts relating to structure and structural design in order to build a model bridge with the highest efficiency ratio.

RUNNING THE CONTEST:
To determine the bridges efficiency ratio we will follow the following steps:

  1. Find the mass of the bridge.

  2. Place a load on the bridge until it breaks.

  3. Find the mass of the load.

  4. Divide the mass supported by the mass of the bridge.

The resulting number is the efficiency ratio.

GRADING THE PROJECT:
Student projects will be graded competitively on the basis of their efficiency ratio. The highest grades will go to the students with the highest efficiency ratio.

Students will also be graded according to their ability to demonstrate correct application of the scientific concepts involved. This grade will be determined using a post activity report.

Quizzes will also be used to determine students understanding of the individual scientific concepts involved in bridge design.
