OBJECTIVE:
The goal of this unit is to apply scientific concepts relating to the building and design of boats. Students will be provided with a limited amount of packaging tape and a nearly unlimited amount of cardboard to build their boats with.

REGULATIONS:
Students will be working in teams and will be expected to build a boat sufficient enough to support the majority of their team members according to the following guide:

# in Group# in Boat
11
22
32
43
53
64

Students will have approximately two weeks to build their boats before the final day of testing. All boats must be done by testing day. Any boat not tested will receive a zero grade.

GRADING THE PROJECT:
Student projects will be graded based on their ability to successfully carry the required number of occupants across the pool. Grades will be given as follows:

A+ Travels across the pool and back successfully
A   Travels across the entire length of the pool
B   Travels 1/2 of the way across the pool
C   Travels less than 1/2 of the way across the pool
D   Fails to float
E   No attempt made

Students will also be graded according to their ability to demonstrate correct application of the scientific concepts involved. This grade will be determined using a post activity report.

Quizzes will also be used to determine students understanding of the individual scientific concepts involved in boat design.
