OBJECTIVE: The goal of this unit is to apply scientific concepts relating to the building and design of boats. Students will be provided with a limited amount of packaging tape and a nearly unlimited amount of cardboard to build their boats with. REGULATIONS: Students will be working in teams and will be expected to build a boat sufficient enough to support the majority of their team members according to the following guide: | # in Group | # in Boat | | 1 | 1 | | 2 | 2 | | 3 | 2 | | 4 | 3 | | 5 | 3 | | 6 | 4 |
Students will have approximately two weeks to build their boats before the final day of testing. All boats must be done by testing day. Any boat not tested will receive a zero grade. GRADING THE PROJECT: Student projects will be graded based on their ability to successfully carry the required number of occupants across the pool. Grades will be given as follows: A+ Travels across the pool and back successfully A Travels across the entire length of the pool B Travels 1/2 of the way across the pool C Travels less than 1/2 of the way across the pool D Fails to float E No attempt made
Students will also be graded according to their ability to demonstrate correct application of the scientific concepts involved. This grade will be determined using a post activity report. Quizzes will also be used to determine students understanding of the individual scientific concepts involved in boat design.
