OBJECTIVE: The goal of this unit is to develop science process skills while learning how science is used to help solve crimes and gather evidence. Forensics is divided into several fields including: - Finger/handprint analysis
- Handwriting/document analysis
- Chemical/drug analysis (toxicology)
- Blood/DNA analysis
- Crime scene analysis
- Hair/paint/fiber analysis
- Ballistics/weapons/tool marks analysis
- Bite mark/dental analysis
- Forensic Entomology
- Forensic Anthropology
- Plus many more
PROCESS: We will cover only a small portion of these fields in class due to time, material, and legal constraints. During class students will be expected to gain skills in each field covered and be able to apply those skills towards solving a mock crime or interpreting evidence. In addition, students will need to choose one field or area and find as much information as they can about it. At the end of the unit they will be required to write a two-page report on the area of their choice. GRADING: Students will be graded on their skill level at mastering the fields we cover in class as determined by the results they come up with for the mock crime and problems they are given. Students will also be graded on their ability to adequately cover the topic they chose to research. Quizzes will also be given to test for general content knowledge of covered information.
