OBJECTIVE: The goal of this unit is to apply scientific concepts relating to heat in order to design and build a successful thermos. RUNNING THE CONTEST: We will begin by trying to discover what actually makes a good insulator by completing a research lab and graphing their results. Following the lab students will be required to take what they learned to design and build a successful thermos. Testing will take place as follows: 100ml of boiling water (100 degrees Celsius) will be poured into each thermos. Thermoses will be allowed to stand for ten minutes. At the end of ten minutes the new temperature will be taken.
GRADING THE PROJECT: Student projects will be graded based on performance. The drop in temperature will be subtracted from 110% in order to determine their final percent. So a 10 degree drop in temperature over 10 minutes will give a 100%. Students will also be graded according to their ability to demonstrate correct application of the scientific concepts involved. This grade will be determined using a post activity report. Quizzes will also be used to determine students understanding of the individual scientific concepts involved in the thermos construction.
